How do I plan activities for Learning Centres?

Goals and Objectives

Determine your purpose and select activities which reflect this goal.

Activities should:
- be developmentally appropriate
- provide practice time for previously taught skills and strategies
- provide opportunities for enrichment
- be multi-leveled and reflect the range of abilities and needs in the class
- provide small group opportunities for interacting with materials that would not be possible in large group situations

Child-Centered Activities
- for active learning- experiencing, interacting, reflecting, communicating
- allow for varying levels of learner ability
- offer some open-ended tasks (no right answers)
- provide for student choice - start with where to work and the freedom to work independently or with peers
to promote ownership

- balance large and small group and individual activities
- choose activities that will take the same amount of time - sometimes 2 or 3 short activities may be needed in one centre while another centre will present a single activity
