TAPPS- Thinking Aloud Pair Problem-Solving

The Tapps strategy was introduced by Lochhead and Whimbey, in 1987 as a method of verbalizing problem-solving thinking to a listening partner. Using this strategy, students rehearse the concepts, relate them to existing knowledge, and produce a deeper understanding of the (Slavin, 1995).

1) Students work in groups of 4 to solve a problem.
2) One pair are the problem-solvers and the other pair are the listeners.
3) The problem solvers verbalize everything they are thinking as they work on a solution; the listeners encourage and offer suggestions if the problem solvers get stuck.
4) The roles are reversed for the next problem.

Variation : As students become more experienced with this strategy, problem-solving and questioning skills, students can work in pairs to be the problem-solver and the listener.
