Literature Circle (Traditional)

BEFORE READING

   

Students Monitor their own reading level

Goal: (Ownership of instructional reading level) Students determine if a book is at their personal reading level. 

Students choose a book according to the following criteria:

After skimming and reading several pages determine if this is the appropriate reading level

v     No more than 4-5 difficult word on a page (Vocabulary)

v     Retell what a passage is about by reading it no more that 2 times. (Comprehension)

TEACHER EVALUATION: Did the student match his reading level with the books?

Create groups based on instructional reading level

1.     Independent - 95% plus

2.     Instructional - 90-95%  (Key to growth in Reading)

3.     Frustration  - 90% and less

Students choose a book according to interest level.

Activate Prior Knowledge/Experience

1. Brainstorm , KWL, Web, Lists

GOAL: All students will have a basic background.

Activity: Resource Based Learning Activity: Ecology Unit, War Theme

 

Predict

Goal: Students are aware of thinking ahead and predicting outcomes.

Oral discussion

Writing connection in journals

 

Skim

Goal students read titles, bolded word , italics

 

Question

Students generate meaningful questions

 

Visualize

Create a mental picture of words and predictions

 

Set a purpose

What role do I complete?

Reading Rate is adjusted

Set the pace based on the purpose -

Skimming (Word Wizard)

Reading to find information - Summarizer, Passage Picker,

Reading for pleasure

Self Correcting

Apply strategies of rereading when words or phrases don't make sense.

 

Monitor Understanding

Identify passages that aren't understood.

Uses specific texts to adjust predictions

 

Retells

Orally and in written form uses details to retell, sequences events, etc.
