Demonstration : Reaction types


Quicktime movies

Reset the quicktime movies by hitting the home button. and then the press the start button when you wish to watch them.

Answer the following questions relating to the two demonstrations.

1. Which reaction released energy? Which reaction absorbed energy?
2. What evidence do you have that that energy was released or absorbed.
3. Why was water placed on the board in the second reaction.
4. The first demonstration involves two reactions. The first is the decomposition of potassium nitrate. Write out the products of this reaction.
5. What purpose does the manganese dioxide serve in the first reaction.
6. The second reaction in the first demonstration is a combustion. What is being burned?
7. In the second demonstration a double replacement reaction between barium hydroxide and ammonium thiocyanate occurs, in which one of the products formed decomposes into a gas and liquid water. Write out the two steps in this reaction, indicating the states so the substances involved.(see below)
