Key Concept

Good readers use graphophonic cueing systems or basic rules for sounding out words. It is important that students understand how to use a cueing system by using the pronunciation key that is provided in a dictionary.

Teaching-Learning Strategies

Task One: The Dictionary

A pronunciation key is provided to help people learn the correct pronunciation of words that are unfamiliar to them.

Have students find 5-10 words in the dictionary that they are unfamiliar with and have them use the pronunciation key to pronounce the words.

pen You may also want to have students record the words and their definitions in their vocabulary logs(.doc) or (.rtf)!

Have the students get into partners and create a conversation using a minimum of eight new words from their lists.

pen This activity will help students to use a tool, like the pronunciation key, that they may take for granted, and to create a fun and unusual conversation that requires them to apply their knowledge of newly acquired vocabulary
