Key Concept

Students are constantly building their individual vocabularies. They must be taught to use various word learning strategies, such as contextual clues, to find the definition of a word they may not understand.

Teaching-Learning Strategies

Students may realize that they are able to understand the meaning of the word by simply looking at the meaning of the sentence in which it appears.

Task One: My Definitions

Give the students the following handout(.doc) or (.rtf) that contains an excerpt from the article "Immortality", as well as a definition map assignment students will complete as they read the short excerpt. There are words in this article for which students may not have concrete definitions.

Students should complete the definition map for each of the underlined.

Task Two: My Vocabulary Log

Hand each student a vocabulary log(.doc) or (.rtf). For the rest of the semester, students should record unfamiliar words they come across during reading, listening, or viewing. The students are responsible for finding the definitions of the words they record.

pen To encourage students to use their vocabulary logs throughout the semester, you may add words as you read aloud in class or have students hand in their logs for marks.
