Resources for Teaching History 30

Print, Video, and Multimedia

History 30 is intended to be a resource-based course. In support of this goal, the Instructional Resources Unit of Saskatchewan Learning evaluates resources on an on-going basis. Bibliographies, annual updates, internet resources, and videos can be accessed on-line at the social science resources page. Teachers can order materials either from publishers or through jobbers, using the information provided. Several new general Canadian history resources have been published for the secondary school market during 2003 and 2004and can be found in the 2004 Learning Resource Materials Update. In keeping with a resource-based learning approach, no single resource covers all topics, but sections of each title can be used to support the Saskatchewan curriculum.

Audiovisual materials listed in the bibliographies may be ordered online through the Educational Video Duplication Service, by quoting the title and the duplication number, or you may browse the catalogue for additional materials. Some of the videos listed also have teacher's guides available for purchase. The National Film Board of Canada, has an extensive collection of History and Social Studies materials available at reasonable cost.

Schools may purchase the CBC documentary series, Canada: A People's History, which is supported by extensive online and print materials, as well as a Teacher's Guide to the series.

Many of the titles (print and video) listed in the bibliographies are available for loan by Saskatchewan teachers at the Saskatchewan Teachers Federation's Stewart Resource Centre, either by visiting in person or requesting online.

In addition, teachers should become familiar with the other Canadian Studies resources, Native Studies 30 and Social Studies 30, both of which have teacher guides and activity guides, for suggested activities which are relevant to History 30. The curriculum documents should be available in all schools and are also accessible online.

Finally, the first unit of Law 30 may be useful for teaching students about the making of law and issues relating to human rights. Unit 8, International Law, will be useful for teaching about refugee and immigration issues in Module Five.
