| Term | Meaning |
| HFOV* | - short for "Horizontal Field of View".
The horizontal angle in degrees that a particular image represents of
the world. The wider a lens the greater the angle of view. When using
a 35mm camera the HFOV is calculable from the focal length as follows:
if camera is used portrait HFOV = 2 * tan-1(12 / focal_length) if camera is used landscapeHFOV = 2 * tan-1(18 / focal_length) (Don't be frightened of these calculations you won't need them to create a basic panoramic image-TM) |
| HTML | - hypertext markup language - the written code for the world wide web that is based on tags that define various parts of a document |
| IEEE 1394 | - technology that allows a person to import or export digital data off of an external source (nicknamed FireWire) |
| i.LINK | - Sony trade name for Firewire or IEEE 1394 technology |
| Interpolation | - when software enhances true resolution
of a digital image by copying pixels and pasting them among existing pixels |
| Java | - an object oriented programming language which allows for multiplatform (windows, Macintosh, linux etc.) programs. A Java applet can be used to present a panoramic image if you want to avoid having a viewer have to download a plugin. (see Applet) |
| Java scripting | - not Java, but a scripting language sort of like HTML. It can be used to enhance a web page by allowing a degree of interactivity. It can be used to integrate panoramic images into a web site. |
| JPEG | - Joint Photographic Experts Group - a technology
developed for the compression of images or video. Jpeg is an image format
which can be altered to take up less storage space. Some quality is sacrificed in order to get a higher rate of compression. JPEG images are good for photo quality. |
| Megapixel | - one thousand pixels |
| Meta files | - graphics that contain both vectors and bitmap data. |
| MPEG | - Motion Pictures Expert Group - multiple standards for the compression of video and audio |
