Teaching and Learning

Classroom Assistant Program

Purpose:
The purpose of this program would be to aid substitute teachers when they arrive at the school to make the day as productive as possible.

Participants:
Grade six, seven, and eight students
Classroom teachers who are interested in the program

Goals:

  • Provide leadership opportunities for senior students
  • Provide modeling for younger students about behavior expected in our school
  • Aid substitutes (when necessary) to help students with subject content area
  • Provide assistance to get administration if interventions are required
  • Ensure that effective learning continues in the absence of the homeroom teacher

The Process:

  1. Students would be required to apply to their classroom teachers indicating their strengths and why they would be interested in the program.
  2. Teachers and the administration would select from those students interested.
  3. Parental permission to participate would be required for selected students.

Training:

  • Students would go through a brief in-service of general expectations of the program, as whole, from the administration.
  • Students would go into assigned classrooms in pairs or small groups and observe the routines, time schedules, and location of materials, and to learn student names.
  • After the training period of two full days in the classroom, students would be required to fill out a personal booklet similar to the one the substitute teachers are given when working at our school.
  • If the teacher has any concerns with the student classroom assistants at this time, they would identify these concerns to the program coordinator and then the students would have an opportunity to rectify the concerns or withdraw from the program.

Implementation:

Students would attend the classroom any day(s) that the classroom teacher is absent. If the teacher is away for an extended period, the classroom assistants would return to their home classrooms until the substitute feels comfortable with the class and has established their own routines, procedures, etc. The classroom assistants will not be away from their own homeroom for more than two consecutive days.
