Core French Curriculum Summary

Introduction:

There are three Core French curricula: Grade 1-5 (including Kindergarten), Grade 6-9, and Grade 10-12.

In each of the curricula, you will find an overview of the teaching methodology, an explanation of how to teach the four language skills (reading, writing, listening and speaking), the role of the teacher and students, evaluation principles, CELs, the Adaptive Dimension, First Nations and Metis Perspective, foundational objectives, rationale for the program, a course overview, suggested linguistic structures, and teaching units.

Points to Consider:

At the K-3 level, the students should spend most of their time doing oral activities (listening and speaking).

In all grades, students should practise the language structures and vocabulary before they do any reading or writing activities.

Beginning in Grade 4 & 5, students begin to analyze the language from a grammatical/linguistic perspective and start to apply these rules to their language learning. In these grades, written activities are also used and evaluated.

In grades 6-9, the students will study the language in much more detail and participate in both written and oral production and comprehension activities.

At the 10-12 level, the same principles hold true, but once again, the language is studied in even more detail.
