Introduction to Safety in the Laboratory
Safety in the lab is always a concern for every teacher. There are many websites available for instructions on lab safety. With Grade 10 students usually a very concise, short list is the one they remember best. The following websites might be helpful to reinforce the rules that you would like to follow in your classroom.
Alberta has a great site (284 pages) in pdf form at:
http://www.education.gov.ab.ca/k_12/curriculum/bySubject/science
/screport.pdf
B.C. also has a document that is smaller and includes a checklist and sample medical forms and field trip forms at:
http://www.bced.gov.bc.ca/irp/resdocs/scisafety.htm
All students are also should have a good understanding of WHMIS (Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System). They should be able to describe WHMIS categories and symbols. HHPS ( Hazardous Household Product Symbols) are also important symbols for students to understand. Although there are only two frames in use since 2001, this site still has all three frames illustrated.
