Introduction to Chemistry

The chemistry component for Science 10 is to enhance students' previous knowledge of chemical classification and properties. Students should increase their knowledge of everyday chemical reactions. They need to be able to give examples of physical and chemical changes and to describe the difference.

Above all, the students should develop a deeper understanding of and an interest in the world around them. They should be leaving Science 10 with a methodology that spurs them to inquire about everyday experiences and outcomes.

Students should be reminded that all objects are made of matter. Energy can cause matter to change. Chemistry is the study of how these changes take place and try to find out how different reactions and combinations can be used to make our lives better. The development of synthetic or human-made substances such as teflon, plastic, nylon and cellophane (plastic wrap) have improved many aspects of our lives. The development of polyvinyl chloride, PVC pipe, has been useful in plumbing supplies, fencing, patios, and eavestroughing. The understanding of the chemical breakdown of nutrients in our bodies has led to healthier lifestyles. The development of antibiotics, the clean combustion of fuel, the innovations in building supplies, and even the non-toxic ingredients used in cleaning supplies are all results of chemistry-based knowledge.

Some of the key questions to be answered in this unit (as recommended by Sask. Learning curriculum guide) are:

1.What are chemical reactions, and how do they differ from physical changes?

2. How are chemical reactions important in our lives and community?

3.How can chemical reactions be represented using words, symbols, and equations?

4. What energy changes take place during chemical reactions?

5. What factors influence the rate of chemical reactions?

6. How does the reliance on fossil fuels affect our society?

7. What is the importance of acids and bases in our lives?
