Volunteers schedules may be flexible, occasional, or fixed depending on personal needs. For planning purposes, some degree of continuity is necessary. Scheduling on a per job basis creates barriers to the success of the volunteer program. Duties that are learned and then practised as part of the routine make it easier for all parties.
Suggested duties might include:
capitalizing on the volunteer's strengths and talents: storytelling and displays
general operations: receiving and processing materials, typing, laminating, filing, equipment
movement
maintenance procedures: shelving, circulation, book repair, inventory, shelf reading, periodicals,
newspapers
