  TECHNOLOGY: Internet

The Internet is another resource in the teacher-librarian's toolbox.  A school or district developed policy should govern the use of the Internet by both students and staff. Students and staff should be taught effective search strategies using either a subject directory, search engine, or deep web. You can support teachers in the design of learning opportunities by creating hotlists of resources and inquiry-based webquests. Sites such as Media Awareness can assist you as you learn how to integrate the Internet into curriculum in a meaningful and relevant way.

Assist students in choosing the most effective of the three search tools.
Subject directories are an excellent starting place for the searcher. They offer a collection of links that have been submitted by web evaluators and then organized into subject categories. Often Internet users don't make use of subject directories, but instead go straight to search engines. Don't overlook subject directories when searching for quality on the Internet.
Search engines are a searchable database of Internet files collected by a computer program (called a wanderer, crawler, robot, worm, spider). While search engines can offer large numbers of websites, there is no selection criteria applied to assist the searcher.
The Deep Web provides searchers with documents, non-textual files such as multimedia files and graphical files stored in searchable databases mounted on the Web. This information is accessible by user query.
