 TECHNOLOGY: Online Information Sources

Electronic resources bring a new and different set of rules to students accustomed to using print materials. There is no set pattern for accessing the information, the wealth of information is overwhelming and often unreliable, and online research findings may challenge dated textbook information. Helping students access the best of the available online resources is a critical role of the teacher-librarian. Before searching the general web, students should be equipped with the skills necessary to access the quality resources that are sometimes hidden on the Internet.

Focusing the Search for Information

Use the acronym N.E.E.D.S. to help students focus their Internet search. The search should begin with subscription databases, encyclopedias (subscription or free), online experts, and directories. Searching the general web should be the final search strategy.

and use the correct tool.
