5.1 Stage Properties

Anything that is not part of the set, nor worn by the actor is defined as a Stage Property. They are often called "Props" for short. Props are real or replicated items which are used by actors on stage. They include such things as dishes, cutlery, portraits, phones, weapons and so on.

The best place to start learning about stage properties is in your theatre departments prop storage. You will find all kinds of ideas on materials and methods of construction as well as the types of props which can be made or those that should be borrowed. Try to substitute plastic for glass whenever you can. Props need to look real on the stage but should never have the possibility of breaking and causing potential hazards during a show.
