8.1 Backstage Roles & Responsibilities
It is not difficult to define the perfect stage manager. It is, however, very difficult to find all of the characteristics required for the position in one person. With much work and practice it is not impossible to become very strong in this role.
A stage manager must be a great communicator and a great organizer. They must have their finger on the pulse of a production at all times and be able to communicate the needs of the Director to the various technical departments involved in bringing the show to life throughout pre-production. During the run of the show they must be able to follow the script carefully and call all cues from a master cue sheet. This requires great skill and precise timing. Before the show the stage manager will always be the first person on the scene, checking to make sure that all is in order before the curtain.
If things are not to the satisfaction of the stage manager, communication must be made with the department in charge. They must also be a supporter and a source of encouragement for the performers and technicians.
Although the position can be highly stressful, a successful stage manager will retain their composure and strive to bring out the best in all aspects of a production. |
