8.2 Backstage Safety

Working on a stage crew might have you thinking you need the attributes of a bat to survive the low light conditions on stage between scenes. Being able to operate in these conditions calls for a few safety guidelines.

  • Rehearse backstage movement in the light and in the dark to familiarize each member of the crew with the process. Any problems should be solved during rehearsal.
  • Before the show, check all cables and cords. Be sure that all are covered or safe from tripping hazards.
  • Never operate in total darkness. There should always be just enough light to see what you are doing.
  • Know what you are doing before you do it.. rehearsal can not be stressed enough.

You must now organize a safety-conscious set-up and strike of a one-act play starting from a clear stage to all sets and props spiked and in position. You will be timed on your set-up and strike of the set. The goal of this activity is to practice teamwork and communication to execute a planned event. This is a requirement at Drama Festivals and is a part of the over-all adjudication of a play.
