9.1 Work Study

There is no better experience than on-the-job experience. Working with people brings out the best in us. We learn from others and they learn from us. It is the objective of this part of the course to give you the opportunity to apply your skills in a real production and to work with agencies outside of your school to gain invaluable experience.

So where can you put your theatre skills to work? Every community has elementary school productions, church productions, professional travelling shows and possibly a community players group. Also, music festivals would provide a venue to study many of the elements of theatre arts. Larger communities may have theatre companies and if the director or producer is approached may be willing to mentor a student of theatre arts.

Your work study will depend largely upon the community you live in. It is important to engage possible partners and establish an open communication with them. Your evaluation will be modified to suit your situation by your instructor. Your Personal Journal is crucial during this phase of the course. It will be the means by which you communicate with your instructor and reflect upon what you have learned.
