Using Multi-Media Resources in Your Program

There are a number of ways that you might use multi-media resources to support student learning in the classroom, or to facilitate teacher learning in new instructional areas. Listed below are a few ideas:

1. Supporting students with their homework - learning beyond the classroom:

Students could be provided with web addresses to access online materials at home. This would allow the students to review and reinforce concepts delivered in the classroom. The online materials would also allow students to work at their own pace, providing an opportunity to master concepts presented in the classroom. The online resources could also be used to help a student reinforce concepts learned in previous grades.

2. Supporting classroom activities/learning:

Incorporating the use of web resources into your program provides an opportunity for the teacher to use alternate instructional strategies. An individual lesson or a complete unit of study could be completed using web based resources. A computer lab would have to be available for these options.

A classroom computer with an internet connection, combined with a data projector could be another example of using this material in the classroom.
Many applets are available to demonstrate complex concepts that would be difficult to demonstrate by the more traditional methods.

A stand alone computer could be used to provide concept enrichment for students who have mastered the instructional objectives currently being taught.

3. Supporting parental involvement in their children’s learning.

Curricular resources for a particular unit of study, or an entire course, could be accessed online by parents. Parents could then become familiar with the learning objectives and provide the necessary assistance to support the learning of their child.

4. Support Professional Development

Multi-media resources are a great way to facilitate teacher learning in new instructional areas. Resources are available to support each learning objective in many courses of study in most subject areas. Many of the online resources have printable worksheets, formula sheets, or topic review documents that can be easily printed and used in a regular classroom environment.
