How
is learning online different from learning in a traditional classroom
setting?
- In
many ways learning math online is the same as learning in the
traditional classroom setting. There is a formal lesson from which
you create meaningful notes and examples on a particular learning
objective. These notes are used to help complete daily assignments
and to prepare for chapter tests and final exams. Your teacher
may ask to see your notes occasionally during the semester.
- Extra
help and examples are available if you did not fully understand
a particular topic introduced in the formal lesson.
- Practice
questions and quizzes allow you to quickly test your mastery of
the concepts.
- Finally,
an assignment will be completed to practice the lesson objectives.

When
do I do my online math course?
- Math
is a subject that needs to be practiced on a daily basis. One
concept is often the basis for a future concept so the lessons
and chapters are designed to be completed in a particular order.
- You
will need to fit math into your regular time table with all other
subjects. The flexibility of an online math course allows you
to select a time of day that best fits your schedule. The lessons
are available 24 hours a day. Additionally, you do not necessarily
need to be online at the same time as the instructor, although
this might be a requirement from time to time.
Are
there unit tests? How do I write them?
- You
will write unit tests for each unit of study in the math course.
Most of these tests will be a traditional written test, written
at your home school on a scheduled date. Ground mail and/or fax
machines will be used to send written exams to the instructor.
If you are asked to fax your work, you may want to photocopy the
work prior to faxing so that a dark original copy is sent through
the fax machine.

Is
there attendance in the class?
- Although
attendance is not taken in the same manner as a face to face class,
the instructor will expect you to be online and completing your
work on a daily basis. The instructor has the ability to monitor
the dates and times that you are online as well as what documents
you have accessed. If you are not working on the course on a regular
basis the instructor may remove you from the course.
Is
there a textbook for this course?
- Yes.
Most assignments will be taken from the textbook. The textbook
is also a good resource for extra help and examples to support
each learning objective. Please use it for your written assignments,
and for extra help and examples.
Do
I need a computer?
- This
is an "online" course. Although you do not need your
own computer, you do need daily access to a computer that is capable
of connecting to the internet. You will also need to be able to
print documents as well as send and receive e-mail. Follow this
link (hotmail)
if you need to create a free e-mail account.
How
do I get help on topics I don't understand?
- Math
help will come in many different forms. The instructor is always
one source of help. Email your teacher indicating the question
you are having difficulty with. Be sure to be specific with the
number and location of your question. You may also seek help from
teachers, or friends at your home school, your parents and siblings,
or you can post questions on the bulletin board in your online
classroom .
